Section 1: Competency Standards

1. Practice occupational health and safety measures
2. Carryout workplace communication
3. Apply workplace literacy and numeracy
4. Work in teams
5. Maintain the relationship with the elder
6.Identify physical, mental, social and spiritual changes
in old age and promote wellbeing
7. Attend domestic affairs of the elder
8. Prepare living area of the elder
9. Maintain personal hygiene and appearance of the elder
10. Maintain Food and nutrition of the elder
11. Administration of medication
12. Attend basic first aid and vital signs
13. Care of an elderly person

Section 2: Curriculum

5. Introduction to elder care and role of the elder care giver.
6. Physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing in old age

10. Maintenance of the nutritional status of the elder
11. Administration of drugs medication
12. First aid and vital signs
13. Care of elderly elder

Program Objective

  • Understand the principles, theories and concepts that applies to elderly care giving. 
  • Demonstrate appropriate practice of elderly care giving 
  • Discuss current contemporary issues, which underpin the effective delivery of elderly care giving 
  • Develop the professional development and autonomy in pursuit of excellence in the context of elderly care giving. 
  • Develop critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making abilities in the context of elderly care giving. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand the relevance of reflective practice in the context of learning outcomes in elderly care giving.

  • Registered in Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC), Sri Lanka
  • National Vocational Qualification Level 04

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of GCE (O/L) Examination with a minimum “S” pass for English or an equivalent qualification.

Duration

  • 12 months (including 06 months internship)
  • Total number of hours: 720 hours
